Where technology helps most

Getting a complete, structured measurement set into a tailor's hands. The numbers are not the hard part. Transmitting a dozen measurements accurately by message, without transcription errors, is.

A shareable link or QR code solves that problem directly.

Where it does not replace a tailor

Made-to-measure is about drape and posture. A tailor assessing how wool falls across your shoulders is doing something no measurement captures.

Measurements describe your body. They do not describe how a specific fabric behaves on it.

The accuracy question

Published smartphone validation reports root-mean-square errors of 2.5 cm at the arm, 4.6 cm at the hip, 5.1 cm at the thigh and 6.1 cm at the waist.

For a made-to-measure suit, 6 cm at the waist is significant. The professional standard says so too: researchers examining five consecutive 3D scans per participant found only 21.5% of measurements met ANSUR tolerances.

Even repeated professional scanning does not reliably hit industrial tolerances. Verify the numbers that matter most by hand.

The measurement set a tailor needs

Raise the subject of ease

NMSU Extension specifies 3 to 4 inches of ease on the bust and 1 to 2 inches from nape to waist. If you send measurements without discussing ease, you may get a garment that fits the numbers and not your body.

Saying “I understand ease and want 3 inches at the bust” produces a materially better conversation.

Frequently asked questions

Are AI measurements accurate enough for made-to-measure?

Borderline. Published smartphone validation reports errors of 2.5-6.1 cm. For made-to-measure, verify the critical measurements manually, particularly waist, which has the largest error.

What measurements does a tailor actually need?

The ISO 7250 landmark set. For most tailoring: bust or chest, natural waist, hip, shoulder, nape to waist, back width, sleeve length and inseam.
